A small team that builds great tools.

We’ve done this before.

We started in 2024 with a viral DIY project and a Raspberry Pi Zero (hence, the name). In ’25 and ’26, we’ve shipped Zerowriter Ink to writers around the world — and we still are! We learned everything about building consumer electronics the hard way and developed our own underlying display technologies, boards, and processes.

Now our team in Ottawa, Ontario is ready with the first fully-realized Zerowriter. Each device assembled by hand and personally tested in-house. It’s been a difficult year for Canadian businesses. We’re proud to build as much as we can at home and build real jobs in a traditional tech-forward city.

Production capacity exceeds 300 units per month and assembly supports hard-working Canadian workers. Our first units will be ready to roll forward in late 2026. We’ll be fulfilling this campaign first-in, first-out.

Zerowriter Fold is a finished production prototype. The next steps are finalizing manufacturing, parts procurement, and assembly. First orders are expected to ship in late 2026. First Wave backers ship first. First in, first out.
We’re fulfilling on a first-come, first-serve basis. Those who order earliest get their Zerowriter Fold earliest. We’re splitting fulfillment into waves to keep things moving, so backers can expect an ongoing process rather than one big ship date. Signing up now holds your spot and your First Wave price. There’s no payment required until the campaign goes live.
Yes. Zerowriter Fold creates plain text .txt and .md files, which are compatible with any modern operating system. Write on the Fold, then transfer your files to any computer for further editing if you like. No drivers, no proprietary software required.
The keyboard uses Choc v1 switches. They are user-replaceable and hot-swappable. No soldering required. There are dozens of Choc-compatible switches available with a range of typing profiles and feels. We’ll be featuring some enthusiast switch options when we launch.
Zerowriter Fold runs on Zerowriter Core, written in Arduino and releasing as open source in the coming months. Open source means that even if the company isn’t around someday, people can still build, modify, and develop for the Fold. Your work and writing is secure and stable, and our software can be kept in-check and improved by hundreds or thousands of developers around the world.
We ship worldwide. Shipping, handling, taxes, tariffs, and/or VAT will all be handled via a pledge manager after the campaign ends — they’re not included in the First Wave price. We’ve learned the world changes too quickly to offer accurate quotes ahead of time, and we’d rather be honest about that upfront.

For rough planning purposes: raw shipping runs approximately $20–35 USD depending on your location. European customers should expect VAT on top (typically around 20%, though it varies by country — 19% in Germany, 20% in France and the UK, up to 25%+ in Scandinavia). American customers: as of 2026, goods imported from Canada carry approximately a 10% tariff.

Zerowriter Fold really only uses power when you type. Your writing pace, how much time you spend thinking, your screen refresh settings, brightness level. All of it affects battery life, and it varies significantly person to person. A slow, thoughtful writer with their screen light off will see very different numbers than someone working away with the frontlight on full.
